  • Be There

There’s a total eclipse off the sun on Monday. But only for those who are in the right place at the right time. For everyone else, they will see that the sun is partially obscured, but the totality of the event will escape them. For people fortunate enough to be both in the path of the totality and have a view that is not obstructed, there will be a moment of magic when the Sun is completely shielded by the Moon. Some people will stay home, some people will go see. But there will not be another eclipse in North America for 20 years. Whenever there is a special event, like a training or tournament, some people will stay home and some people will show up. The event may not turn ....

  • Try the Ice Cream

Do you like ice cream? I bet you have a favorite flavor. But before you had a favorite flavor, you had to try it first. Take a bite. See if you like the combination of flavors. I like running. I like bicycling. I like swimming. I thought I would liketriathlons, so I signed up fora sprint triathlon. Something about the whole experience wasn't for me. The swimming was in a river instead of a pool like I practiced in, my bike wasn't up for the ride, and every step of the run made me wish it was all over. Ultimately, I'm glad I did it once, but didn't want to try again. Later, when I started training in Martial Arts, I didn't know if I would like to compete in Taekwondo tournaments, but ....

  • Do it Till it Feels Good

I've never seen a student want to give up when they kept training till it felt good. Usually, people lose motivation when they need to do more of the good things they need. One salad to someone who is used to a junk food diet will not feel good. One push-up for someone who is out of shape will not feel good. One difficult conversation for someone who is used to being walked over will not feel good. But if we keep moving toward growth, we know that one day, it will feel good. Training is supposed to feel good. When we practice something new for the first time, we usually experience challenges, frustration, and discomfort. However, if we keep training, we eventually get to the point ....

  • Practice On Purpose

A goal is a specific change in yourself that you are willing to work to achieve. Earning a black belt should help you make the changes in your life that you have always wanted. I have seen so many students make progress not just in their taekwondo skills but the confidence and skills they build on the mat radiate into the other parts of their lives. Suddenly, they're shining brighter academically, personally, and professionally as a result of their martialarts practice. However, these results usually only kick in once the student has decided to practice on purpose. Students usuallystarttraining like they do anything else. They do what they are supposed to do because the instructor ....

  • Say It Out Loud

We have been working on Discipline in class and in our lives this cycle. One of the best disciplines that I have been practicing for years now is to say things out loud. When I have something positive to say about someone else, even if I am afraid that I won't say it perfectly, it is important for me to say it out loud. I can't tell you how many times this practice has paid off in my life. So many times I will feel the need to notice something special about someone, and when I say my observation out loud, they light up like a Christmas Tree. So many people are working without recognition of their efforts, making modest gains in areas that matter to them. When we take a moment to ....

  • Give Tools and Encouragement

Most of us believe people naturally strive for excellence. But excelling at anything requires practice. Sometimes, parents complain that their child isn't practicing at home. While sometimes it is true that a student might be unmotivated to practice, young people often lack the skill to make a training plan. Having a plan for when practice will happen, what you will do when practicing, and how long you will practice can make a significant difference in a young person's willingness and desire to practice at home. Having a parent or family member help by pulling up resources available on the Team MYMA app to practice forms, holding a target for kicking and punching drills, or just watching ....

  • Train Below Your Maximum

One of the biggest mistakes that athletes make when they are looking to make gains in their fitness journey is thinking that kicking as high as they can, as hard as they can, and as fast as they can is the quickest way to make them kick higher, stronger, and faster. Maxing out on any activity doesn’t lead to rapid growth; it leads to rapid burnout. Sometimes, burnout is fatigue, injury, or soreness that lasts for days after training. The superior strategy is to aim for 70-80% of your ability in the area you wish to improve. Allowing ourselves to hold something back in training means that we experience the benefits of the exercise without burnout. This lets us enjoy the ....
